I have several devices I want to access via SSH using the SSH sensors of PRTG. In the device settings, section Credentials for Linux/Solaris/macOS (SSH/WBEM) Systems, I want to paste a Private Key. Which format do I need and how does this all work?

This article applies to PRTG Network Monitor 19 or later, as well as to previous (deprecated) versions

SSH credentials are set on device level (or above). On the PRTG device you want to use the SSH sensors on, open the Settings tab and go to section Inherit Credentials for Linux/Solaris/macOS (SSH/WBEM) Systems. You can either Login via Password or Login via Private Key.

Note: When using a private key, it has to be in OpenSSH RSA format and may not be encrypted.

In this article, we will show you how to use your existing .ppk SSH key with PRTG, converting it using PuTTYGen. We assume that:

  1. You have already generated an RSA Private Key (which currently exists in .ppk format).
  2. A corresponding public key already exists on the target system (usually in the user’s /.ssh/authorized_keys file).

Note: If you do not yet have a private/public key pair for your systems, you can use PuttyGen to generate such keys as well, but this article will not explain how to do this.

Step 1: Save your existing PPK key file

Save your existing RSA Private Key in .ppk format to a text file named mykey.txt. For example, your PPK key may look like this:PuTTY-User-Key-File-2: ssh-rsaEncryption: noneComment: myCommentPublic-Lines: 4AAAAB3NzaC1yc2EAAAABJQAAAIBrXo98aGCVK5kbx9v9nEIWyK3cAuPuqMG12Qmy[…]hlZAcQPrivate-Lines: 8AAAAgBFpR7NPMkG0Cv2WB/+czHJlu1QcJPZE4SRoYm/q4HSkW8iYsMx51HgUfszvbGG7Xw+ba2jY0ovIelGyRcOhNCr85tYOZ8rqq2QuDBlw1H5M7VnjCpgC/z1Exwx/[…]EF34eaOg5KWgdb2+SNwl50QxFwW1r8CUeSuYOykI2PiNU0brMAMgWe68t4HHWWe7ngA=Private-MAC: 05c421a1d5269eb8cff250445e389f00ea5c2186

Step 2: Download PuTTYGen

Go to the PuTTY Download Page, download, and execute puttygen.exe.

Step 3: Load PPK SSH key file

In PuTTY Key Generator, click the Load button and load your mykey.txt file. You will see a success message.

Step 4: Export OpenSSH key file

Generator

Make sure that you leave the passphrase fields empty so that the key is not encrypted during export.

Also make sure that you select an RSA Type of key. PRTG does not support DSA keys! Macromedia dreamweaver 8 for mac free download.

From the main menu of PuTTY Key Generator, select Conversions Export OpenSSH key.

Confirm the warning message by clicking Yes.

Save the key to a file named mykey-openssh.txt. Open this file in a text editor and make sure that there is no line such as Proc-Type: 4,ENCRYPTED

If there is, the key is in encrypted format and will not work with PRTG.A correct key will look like this:-----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----MIICWQIBAAKBgGtej3xoYJUrmRvH2/2cQhbIrdwC4+6owbXZCbIoaCSgNf+tl5eZ848pDe/EcbADdOA+a7E5El3+8k0grjZiFwpjJFgGZgYvdvRyl1rdvYu7l27Qa9OU[…]glYyWqk94+bYvo0CQDx8uMBf2Wlc5iKIIlrrEF34eaOg5KWgdb2+SNwl50QxFwW1r8CUeSuYOykI2PiNU0brMAMgWe68t4HHWWe7ngA=-----END RSA PRIVATE KEY-----

Step 5: Enter OpenSSH key in PRTG

Open your mykey-openssh.txt key file and copy its contents to the clipboard. Copy the entire key, including the -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY----- and -----END RSA PRIVATE KEY----- lines.

In the PRTG web interface, on the device’s Settings tab, section Credentials for Linux/Solaris/macOS (SSH/WBEM) Systems, set the login method to Login via Private Key.

Then paste the entire key, including the BEGIN and END lines, into the Private Key field.

Save your settings.

Once pasted and saved, the private key will be shown as

Note: If you do not insert a private key for the first time, but change an existing private key, you need to restart your PRTG core server service for the private key change to take effect. You can restart services in the PRTG web interface under Setup System Administration Administrative Tools.

Done

Your SSH sensors will now connect to your devices and query monitoring data.

Is it possible to use this Sensor with Password AND Keyfile?

Hello Michel,
No, either keyfile or password. Both is not possible.
Best,
Sebastian

I'm getting a 'Not licensed' or 'Paused (exceeds license limitation of x sensors)' message for a number of sensors I added to the configuration. However, I have not reached the sensor limit for my license. How do I go about fixing this?

PRTG Network Monitor is licensed on a 'per sensor' basis, meaning that the license does not limit monitoring to a number of devices. Due to this license mechanism it is possible that under circumstances PRTG Network Monitor will display a 'Not Licensed' message. This article explains what to check and do if parts of your sensors in PRTG Network Monitor display a blue status icon and show 'Not Licensed'.

First of all, open Setup License from the main menu bar in the PRTG web interface. The fields of interest are License Status and Licensed Edition.

Note: In older PRTG versions, you can find according information under 'Setup PRTG Status System Status' or 'System PRTG Status System Status'. Look for the fields 'Edition' and 'Activation Status' in section 'Licensing'.

Freeware Edition (License key already in use)

If you find Freeware Edition (License key already in use) or a similar message in the edition field, then PRTG detected another instance of PRTG running with the same license key in your network (which is only allowed for PRTG XL5/Unlimited licenses).

Deactivate the license on the second instance to revert it to a freeware edition or uninstall it after license deactivation. Then restart the PRTG services of your original PRTG installation.

Note: In older PRTG version you might have to enter a freeware or trial license key for the odd instance to stop running it as commercial edition. Use the PRTG Administration Tool (or PRTG Server Administrator) for this purpose.

Freeware Edition (Activation Grace Period Expired)

If you are running a commercial version and the program reports Freeware Edition (Activation Grace Period Expired), check under Setup License from within PRTG. Please be aware that PRTG Network Monitor needs to be activated within 10 days (this is the 'Activation Grace Period') after the initial installation on a machine. As such, if you haven't activated, please try to do so using the automatic mechanism or, if this fails, use the manual activation option.

For details, see PRTG Manual: PRTG Status—Licensing Status and Settings.

Other Cases of 'Not Licensed' Sensors: Paused (exceeds license limitation of x sensors)

Most other cases with sensors showing a Not Licensed status are caused by exceeding the limit of licensed sensors. If the number of current used sensors exceeds the number of licensed sensors, all sensors above that limit will be paused automatically with the status Not licensed. In such an instance, please consider an upgrade to a higher edition of PRTG.

You can look up the number of used sensors under Setup PRTG Status, section Database Objects, in the PRTG web interface and compare this number with your licensed edition.

What if I can't afford to upgrade the number of sensors right now? Can I just pause some of the other sensors? If I removed some of the other sensors I am not using why do these remain 'Not licensed?

Your license allows to run the stated number of sensors at a time. For example, with a PRTG Network Monitor 500 license, you can run 500 sensors simultaneously. You can create more sensors than supported by your license, but these will be paused initially. You can then pause other (existing) sensors in order for the new sensors to start monitoring. Please note this only works with manually paused sensors.

I have the sensors 'Not Licensed' probem but none of above answers match. The bottom of PRTG welcome page reads 'PRTG Network Monitor 500 license supports 500 sensors'. I have 141 sensors running (green) and 23 paused with 'not licensed'. So it seems like if there was 141 sensors limit. Any help appreciated.

Please forward a screenshot of the 'Setup -> PRTG status -> System status' page for analysis to [email protected] Please refer to this knowledge base case.

I don't seem to have 'PRTG Status' in 'Setup'.What's there is: 'Account Settings' and 'Optional Downloads and Add-Ons'

Are you using a PRTG administrator account?

Damn.. I am not admin. And also I didn't know that other user have created 360 sensors before me so that only 140 was left.My apology for silly question and thank you for help!
